Muslim Friends of Osler complete $1 million pledge to Brampton Civic

three men cut a cake next to a giant cheque

Extraordinary accomplishment marks end of eight-year fundraising campaign

June 27, 2014 BRAMPTON – Muslim Friends of Osler had a million reasons to celebrate last week after completing their $1 million pledge to the Osler Foundation.

In 2007, following a South Asian Roundtable hosted by Osler's Foundation, a group of business owners, community leaders, physicians and individuals from the Muslim community came together to invest in health care in their community. The group named themselves the Muslim Friends of Osler and agreed to make a $1 million donation to Brampton Civic Hospital.

Eight years and countless fundraisers later, the group and its supporters gathered in Brampton Civic's courtyard on June 19 to present a final cheque to the Foundation and to celebrate the successful conclusion of their inspirational campaign. Supporters, committee members, local politicians and Osler staff and physicians came together to mark the occasion with cake and inspirational speeches.

Muslim Friends of Osler committee chair, Dr. Farooque Dawood, singled out the generosity of volunteers like Nilufer Mama, who gave her time, talent and energy to organize events and communicate with the community, and Osler's own Dr. Naveed Mohammad, who led by example with generous donations and boundless enthusiasm. Committee member Dr. Hamid Slimi inspired the crowd with a moving speech that ended with a vow to continue raising funds for Brampton Civic, calling any additional donations "the cherry on the cake."

"On behalf of the physicians, nurses, staff and patients at Brampton Civic, thank you to the Muslim Friends of Osler for the tremendous amount of work they have put in to achieve this goal," said Dr. Naveed Mohammad, Vice President of Medical Affairs, William Osler Health System. "The amount of work it took to raise this much money is astounding. Thank you to all of the tireless volunteers, supporters, champions and committee members for your dedication and incredible generosity. Your passion and commitment to health care has helped countless patients."

The Muslim Friends of Osler's $1 million pledge inspired other groups to make similar pledges, including the Amigos Portugueses do Peel Memorial and the Indo-Canadian Friends of Osler.

"Everything we are able to do to help our patients and their families is strengthened by the contributions from the Muslim Friends of Osler," said Ken Mayhew, President and CEO, William Osler Health System Foundation. "Every community needs leaders and we are fortunate to have leaders like the Muslim Friends of Osler, who started with a meeting in a basement and turned that into a $1 million reality. Their actions have inspired others to follow in their footsteps, generating ripples in a philanthropic pond."
