Crowd gathers on new hospital site to celebrate redevelopment progress as part of Osler’s Annual General Meeting

June 26, 2014 BRAMPTON – Over 300 people gathered in a tent on the site of the new Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness yesterday to celebrate a monumental milestone in William Osler Health System’s (Osler) Peel Memorial redevelopment journey.

With dignitaries, health care and business leaders from across the region, donors, community members and Osler staff, physicians and volunteers in attendance, Vic Dhillon, MPP for Brampton West announced that Plenary Health has signed a fixed price contract to design, build, finance and maintain the new Peel Memorial. This means that construction on the new hospital is set to begin.

"This is an exciting time – not only for the hospital, but for Brampton and surrounding areas," said Kay Blair, Chair, William Osler Health System Board of Directors. "This community has been committed to revitalizing this hospital for years and now, we are seeing these dedicated efforts come to life before our eyes."

"The new Peel Memorial is giving us a chance to lead the way in constructing a state-of-the-art hospital that will meet the increasing health care needs of our growing community, while changing our health system by focusing on health, wellness and prevention of illness and chronic disease," she added. "We should be proud to be building this type of facility in Brampton and look forward to the many benefits it will bring."

The new Peel Memorial will provide a range of specialities, clinics, day programs and services – including high-tech diagnostics, surgery and women’s and children’s health. Space will also be created for education classrooms where patients and family members can learn from health professionals about how to take a more active role in managing their own health.

At Peel Memorial, partnerships with other leading health organizations and complementary health providers – such as naturopaths and chiropractors – will make it easier for patients to get the care they need, when and where they need it most. Open from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Peel Memorial’s Urgent Care Centre will alleviate pressures on the emergency department at Brampton Civic Hospital and help patients with non life-threatening illnesses or injuries get treated more quickly.

"Osler's vision of 'patient-inspired health care without boundaries' is beyond fitting when it comes to the new Peel Memorial," said Neil Davis, Vice Chair, William Osler Health System Board of Directors and Chair, Peel Community Partners Task Force. "This new facility is giving us a unique opportunity to put into practice the newest research and thinking around the world’s leading health care systems and embrace change so that we can deliver outpatient services in a patient and family-friendly environment that is well-coordinated and cost-effective."

The value of the fixed price contract with Plenary Health is approximately $530 million. Construction on the new 350,000 square foot hospital will begin immediately, and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2016.

"The health care needs of local communities are best understood by those who live and work in them," said Maria Britto, Chair, Central West Local Health Integration Network Board of Directors. "Today, we recognize the vision and support of a community that has helped to bring a second state-of-the-art health facility to Brampton and the surrounding area and, when I think of how many people have collaborated to make this milestone possible, I am so very proud to say that together we are making healthy change happen."

Plenary Health was one of three short-listed teams bidding on the project and was chosen as the ‘preferred proponent’ after an extensive evaluation process led by Infrastructure Ontario. The Plenary Health team includes: Developer: Plenary Group (Canada) Ltd. Constructor: PCL Constructors Canada Inc. Architect: Diamond Schmitt Architects and RTKL, an Arcadis Company Financial Advisor: RBC Capital Markets Facilities Management: Honeywell Limited.

"This milestone brings a deep sense of personal satisfaction and gratitude," said Bob Peacock, President of Almag Aluminum and Peel Memorial Campaign Cabinet Chair. "I particularly want to thank the members of the Peel Memorial Campaign Cabinet who, very early on, committed their time, energy, leadership and financial support to realize a bold, new health model in Peel Memorial. For those who have been waiting to see our new hospital under construction before making a commitment, now is the time. We need you to join us to fund the building, equipment and technology required to open its doors."

The Peel Memorial celebration took place during Osler's Annual General Meeting, and provided Osler with the opportunity to share its highlights and achievements with its guests through videos, special presentations, the launch of Osler's new mobile app, and a new Annual Report available entirely on Instagram.

"It was another remarkable year for Osler thanks to the dedicated efforts of our team – our staff, physicians and volunteers," said Matthew Anderson, President and CEO of William Osler Health System. "What made this year stand out among others was the tremendous support and momentum behind Osler's redevelopment projects, and the progress we are making in helping transform health care in this region and beyond."
