Eligible patients can have their knee replaced at Brampton Civic Hospital in the morning and be back at home the same afternoon.
The hospital launched the same-day surgery program in October, one of only a few community hospitals across Ontario to offer this innovative option.
Dr. Ato Sekyi-Otu is one of a multidisciplinary team to participate in the pilot and says there are significant advantages to this approach from a quality and patient experience perspective.
"Patients who recover at home report higher patient satisfaction levels and have a lower risk of hospital-acquired infection," he said.
Same-day surgery discharge is still a relatively novel approach in Canada, but one that's gaining momentum as hospitals like ours explore innovative ways to further provide high-quality, safe, patient-centred care, and improve wait times.
Osler is at the leading edge of this evolution and in the company of larger teaching hospitals like Women's College Hospital, St. Michael's Hospital and The Ottawa Hospital.
According to recent data, Osler performs approximately 100 knee replacement and 30 hip replacement surgeries each month. About 20 per cent of these patients are expected to be eligible for same-day discharge.
To determine eligibility, each patient undergoes an in-depth screening process which takes into consideration the patient's age, living situation/social support, number of active medical problems, cognition, mobility and more.
