McMaster/WOHC Family Medicine Teaching Centre

Effective July 1, 2008, William Osler Health Centre (WOHC) becomes an officially recognized family medicine teaching site of McMaster University’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

The McMaster/WOHC Family Medicine Teaching Centre (FMTC) is based at William Osler Health Centre’s new, modern 1.3 million square foot Brampton Civic Hospital. Operations officially begin with seven first-year family medicine residents including two International Medical Graduate (IMG) students. The program will grow to a total of 18 residents (9 first year, 9 second year) by 2010.

Through this new partnership, McMaster University provides funding, curriculum and administration for the teaching program while WOHC provides medical residents the opportunity to train in the hospital along side our Family Physicians and Specialists; and gain hands-on experience in a family medicine clinical setting.

The residency program is two years in length and is the final training required to become a family physician. Participants have the advantage of training in diverse, high-volume, fast-paced community hospitals. Residents will also benefit from the support services and clinical infrastructure of a brand new hospital housing state of the art equipment and technology.

Residents will gain hospital experience primarily at Brampton Civic Hospital with some training at Osler’s Etobicoke General site. Specialty rotations include Care of the Elderly, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Paediatrics, Palliative Care, and Rural Family Medicine.

Residents will receive a combination of educational opportunities ranging from traditional classroom training to practical experience working alongside our community family physicians. This year’s residents are placed with family medicine practices throughout our community.

Upon completion of the residency program and subsequent exams, these physicians will be fully accredited members of the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
