Psychology is one of the regulated health professions in Ontario.
Psychologists in Ontario have obtained a doctoral degree (either a Ph.D. or Psy. D.) and then completed a year of supervised experience.
Psychologists in health care conduct psychological assessments that may include standardized psychological tests. A psychological assessment may be carried out to diagnose psychological problems, to identify and understand cognitive changes resulting from injury or illness, or to identify strengths and coping skills.
Psychologists treat a wide range of problems, including depression, anxiety, major mental disorders, learning disabilities, substance abuse, family problems, marital/ relationship problems, and difficulties coping with health problems. They also provide consultation to other professionals.
At William Osler Health System psychological services are provided by Psychologists in association with Psychometrists and Behavioral Consultants (unregulated practitioners who are supervised by a Psychologist).
Currently all Psychology staff are located at Brampton Civic Hospital or in community clinics in Brampton. They provide service within the Mental Health Program (Adolescent Program, Adult Day Treatment Program, Child and Adolescent Clinic, Community Mental Health Clinic, Eating Disorders Clinic).
A referral from a Physician affiliated with William Osler Health System is necessary to access psychological services as an inpatient or outpatient of the hospital.
