Osler’s Emergency Departments are here for you

We know COVID-19 is a significant concern for many, but during this time, it is critical to pay close attention to any chronic or emerging health care needs that may arise.

Please rest assured that at Osler, your health and safety is our top priority. We are committed to providing safe, compassionate and high-quality health care at our hospitals, including in our Emergency Departments, and we are taking every precaution to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who comes into our hospitals.

When should I go to the Emergency Department?

You should go to your nearest Emergency Department if you require emergency or urgent care related to a serious injury, illness or condition. This is especially important if you are experiencing symptoms and have an existing chronic condition, including heart disease, kidney disease, or diabetes.

Come to the Emergency Department immediately if you need care for symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Seizures
  • Stroke symptoms such as, loss of movement of half your body, loss of speech, severe dizziness
  • Shortness of breath, dizziness/fainting
  • Numbness or weakness in arms or hands
  • Fever in infants under three years old
  • Pregnancy-related emergencies
  • Overdose/poisoning
  • Mental health issues
  • Sprains, strains or broken bones
  • Serious allergic reactions and skin rashes
  • Asthma attacks
  • Burns
  • Cuts that may need stitches
  • Earaches
  • Conditions related to your eyes
  • Infections
  • Any serious condition you feel is getting worse

For those that qualify, our Virtual Urgent Care service is also available seven days a week, from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.

What precautions has Osler taken in light of COVID-19?

Osler has taken every precaution to ensure the health and safety of everyone who comes through our doors. Among our many safety measures, we are:

  • implementing enhanced cleaning practices and safety measures
  • actively screening all staff, physicians and outpatients
  • providing masks to everyone who comes to our hospitals
  • enforcing a ‘no visitors’ policy
  • restricting the items that can be brought to our sites

We continue to review existing measures and consider new ones on a regular basis, as needed, to ensure the continued safety of our community.

Have Emergency Department hours changed?

Osler’s Emergency Departments remain open 24 hours a day, every day.

Working behind-the-scenes and on the frontlines of our hospitals are thousands of members of Osler staff and physicians who have rallied together to serve this community and our patients in an unprecedented way. These dedicated health care workers are prepared to provide the care our patients need.

Please note the Urgent Care Centre at Peel Memorial is temporarily closed. Our staff and physicians will be happy to care for you at the Brampton Civic Emergency Department, just 15 minutes away. Or for those that qualify, our Virtual Urgent Care service is also available.

Important message about patient admissions

As the number of patients we serve increases, we want to ensure all patients receive care safely and quickly. This may mean your care could be transferred to another hospital. Delivering safe, high quality care is our top priority and a transfer would occur only when we are confident care needs could be met by another hospital. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding during these challenging times.
