General Medicine

Our general medicine team diagnoses and treats diseases of the:

  • heart
  • lungs
  • digestive system
  • nervous system
  • other internal systems

This team provides care that does not involve surgery.

At Osler, our patients are supported by an expert team that includes nurses, hospitalists, general internal medicine physicians, specialists and allied health care professionals. The team collaborates to create a people-centred plan to provide the best possible care.

Our inpatient units care for people with a variety of health care needs. Learn more about these units below.

Brampton Civic

Respirology

Our respirology team cares for patients with acute to chronic health conditions of the respiratory system, including:

  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
  • asthma
  • pulmonary fibrosis
  • acute respiratory illness or disease processes

In this unit, we serve patients who have had or who need:

  • oxygen therapy
  • tracheostomies
  • inhaler and nebulizer therapy
  • infection prevention and control (e.g. negative pressure)

Neurology

Our Neurology Unit specializes in the care of complex neurological conditions including:

  • stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma
  • transient ischemic attack
  • brain injury, neurological and spinal cord trauma
  • common neurological diseases (e.g. cancer, multiple sclerosis, neurological degenerative disease)

Etobicoke General

Medicine and Palliative Care Inpatient Unit

Our Palliative and General Medicine Unit cares for:

  • palliative patients/patients requiring end-of-life care
  • patients with acute medical conditions (e.g. urinary tract infections, dementia, delirium, gastrointestinal (GI) bleed, sepsis, etc.)
  • patients with tracheostomy

The palliative care team includes physicians, nurses and other health professionals who specialize in the care and treatment of patients at the end of life. Services include pain management, comfort measures and social work services to support patients and families.

General Medicine Unit

Our General Medicine Unit provides services for adult patients with acute internal medical conditions not requiring surgery.

These include:

  • urinary tract infections
  • dementia
  • delirium
  • gastrointestinal (GI) bleed
  • sepsis
  • tracheostomy care

Cardiology Unit

Our Cardiology Unit cares for adult patients with complex cardiac conditions such as:

  • acute coronary syndrome
  • cardiac arrhythmias
  • heart failure
  • heart attack
  • post-PCI (percutaneous coronary intervention) care

Through this unit, we can also monitor up to 32 telemetry patients using the latest Philips telemetry monitoring technology.

Neurology Unit

Our Neurology Unit specializes in the care of complex neurological conditions including:

  • stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hematoma
  • transient ischemic attack
  • brain injury, neurological and spinal cord trauma
  • common neurological diseases (e.g. cancer, multiple sclerosis, neurological degenerative disease)

We recently opened six dialysis-capable beds to serve patients in our community who require inpatient dialysis. The neurology team works with the outpatient dialysis nurses at the Etobicoke Wellness Centre to care for these patients.
