Message from Osler’s Board Chair and President and CEO |
In 2024-25, Osler continued to raise the bar as one of Ontario’s leading community teaching hospitals through significant advancements in people-centred care, education, research and community engagement. The launch of our 2024-2029 Strategic Plan, Going Beyond for our people and communities, kicked off what promises to be one of the most exciting chapters yet for Osler and health care in our region. Inspired by the voices of Osler team members, patients, families, our communities and health system, government and academic partners, our new strategic plan reflects their valued insights. Working collaboratively across Osler and beyond, we took considerable steps towards building a more unified, accessible and inclusive health system that delivers on our bold new Vision of 'world-class health care inspired by our people and communities'. This includes adding best-in-class surgical procedures and diagnostics to improve patient outcomes and quality of life, and strengthening well-established care principles and practices so that everyone who comes through our doors feels a strong sense of pride and belonging. Building on our commitments to advance clinical research and educate tomorrow’s health care workforce, we launched dedicated education units at Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic hospitals, established the Osler Research Institute for Health Innovation and expanded our educational affiliation as the primary clinical partner for Toronto Metropolitan University’s new School of Medicine, which will welcome its first medical learners in 2025. This year we also celebrated Peel Memorial’s 100th anniversary of delivering safe, compassionate care. We broke ground on the new Peel Memorial Hospital, marking the next historic chapter in its development as Brampton’s second hospital, which will help meet the needs of our growing community. With more exciting developments on the horizon and an unwavering pursuit to achieve exemplary standing during Osler’s forthcoming Accreditation Canada survey, we look forward to working with our people and our communities towards a bright future, inspiring world-class health care – together. 2024-25 highlights
Inspiring a sense of belonging that supports people to be their best and do their best
Our people are our greatest asset and reflect the diverse communities we serve. They bring their unique experiences to provide the best care for our vibrant and growing population.
Osler’s commitment to our Mission of 'innovative care delivered with compassion' continued to shine brightly during this past year. Stories featuring Doctors Making a Difference, Values Champions, ICU nurse Angel Flores, and Sickle Cell Clinic Nurse Practitioner Beatrice Kahenya, are just some of the extraordinary people who work at Osler.
In 2024-25, we launched an inspiring recruitment campaign so we can continue attracting the very best and brightest people to our hospitals to learn, grow and care for our communities. And, as we looked forward to our exciting future, we also celebrated our proud past and a century of care at Peel Memorial, including the heartwarming People of Peel Memorial series to showcase Osler team members, patients and families, and donors who have helped shape the legacy of Peel Memorial.
We continued to embrace our strength in diversity and elevate equity and inclusivity, launching a refreshed land acknowledgement that reflects our commitment to unlearning and relearning Indigenous histories, building authentic relationships with Indigenous communities and embedding cultural humility into the care we provide.
Our priority continues to be fostering a culture that our people are proud of and one that is founded in respect and trust – where everyone feels a strong sense of belonging.
Relentlessly pursuing world-class, high-quality health care
Guided by our bold new Vision of 'world-class health care inspired by our people and communities', 2024-25 was a year defined by progress. Our commitment to delivering exceptional, people-centered care was the catalyst behind some of our most meaningful accomplishments to date.
We continued to lead the way in cancer care, saving lives through early detection and improved patient outcomes. Osler was the first hospital in the country to offer revolutionary liquid biopsy testing. In 2024-25, we also reached a major milestone in surgical innovation, performing the 1,000th robot-assisted knee replacement surgery. This accomplishment reflects our investment in advancing technology and our commitment to improving the quality of life for our patients.
At Osler, we are driven by our pursuit of excellence. This mindset shapes everything we do and drives our evidence-based, quality initiatives, including a recent innovative approach to managing patients with complex needs more effectively, which saw time-to-inpatient-bed reduced by 13 hours, easing Emergency Department pressures and improving patient outcomes.
Throughout 2024-25, Quality Excellence remained our north star, guiding us to provide excellent care and experiences to our patients through our relentless pursuit of world-class health care.
Optimizing resources to provide effective health care for the communities we serve
In 2024-25, our teams’ steadfast dedication to our Promise of 'Going Beyond' resulted in significant achievements that emphasized our commitment to delivering compassionate, high-quality, people-centred care.
Osler was awarded the prestigious Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO) designation from the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario, following a three-year journey. Becoming a BPSO reflects Osler’s commitment to aligning with international guidelines for the best possible patient outcomes.
Aligned with our 2024-29 Strategic Plan, we launched a new three-year Clinical Priorities Plan to guide how and where we deliver care, with the goal of optimizing patient outcomes.
Osler’s partnerships with community organizations support the delivery of care closer to home, while fostering a positive, collaborative and purpose-driven work environment.
In 2024-25, we signed an historic agreement with Epic Systems to implement a new hospital information system at Osler, marking a significant milestone in our journey to modernize our digital infrastructure and build a more connected, people-centred health care system.
Our role as a leader in health care continued to be a key focus in early 2025 as we celebrated a century of compassionate, community-inspired care at Peel Memorial and the early construction groundbreaking on Brampton’s second hospital. Once completed, this project will significantly increase access to care in our growing communities.
Osler’s unique partnership with community paramedics to provide remote patient monitoring at home is enhancing care continuity and means better health outcomes for patients – this optimizes system resources and ensures patients receive the support they need, both in and outside our hospital walls.
Leading and partnering to transform the health system for Osler’s communities and beyond
Through bold leadership and strategic partnerships, we are reshaping the health care landscape.
In 2024-25, Osler established a significant partnership with the Princess Margaret Cancer Care Network to enhance access to cancer care in our region, which is projected to see cancer cases double in the next 10 to 15 years.
As we strengthened our commitment to improving regional cancer care, we also celebrated an important milestone with the 10th anniversary of Brampton Civic Hospital’s public cord blood collection site. Over the past decade, in partnership with Canadian Blood Services, Osler has collected nearly 10,000 cord blood units, which contain life-saving stem cells used to treat over 80 diseases and disorders, including cancer.
Keeping our Promise of 'Going Beyond', in 2024-25 we continued to transform patient care through our collaboration with MOLLI Surgical, a special, Canadian-made technology that provides a less invasive surgery experience for breast cancer patients. Our innovative spirit also cultivated a new partnership with Intellijoint, a made-in-Ontario tool designed to improve patient outcomes for those requiring hip replacement surgeries.
As we partnered with homegrown health care technologies in our hospitals, we continued building important relationships with community health care organizations. Two Osler physicians, Dr. Carrie Bernard and Dr. Jobin Varughese, were appointed family medicine leadership roles at provincial and national colleges to foster further collaboration with family physicians beyond Osler’s walls.
In 2024-25, Osler’s President and CEO and Osler Foundation’s President and CEO were both honoured with the prestigious King Charles III Coronation Medals for their lifelong dedication to public service. Our Executive Vice President, and Chief Clinical Officer, was recognized for leadership excellence from the Brampton Board of Trade, and we received national awards for nursing leadership, and excellence in patient safety, and inclusion, diversity and accessibility from the Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL), underscoring our commitment to delivering safe, inclusive, and high-quality care.
Developing the health care providers and researchers of tomorrow
As part of our 2024-29 Strategic Plan, we launched a new strategic direction in Research and Academics, which focuses on collaboration between researchers, innovators and scholars to create real-world solutions to improve patient care and better health outcomes.
In 2024-25, we launched the Osler Research Institute for Health Innovation (ORIHI) and inaugural 2025-30 ORIHI Strategic Plan building on over 10 years of valuable health-related research close to home. This step will help inspire innovative solutions to improve the health of our communities in the decades ahead.
Osler also achieved another significant milestone in establishing accredited undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs at Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) School of Medicine, where Osler is the primary clinical partner. These programs, set to launch in July 2025, will welcome more than 100 medical residents to TMU’s School of Medicine and Osler’s resident program.
Also in 2024-25, our academic practice partnership with Humber Polytechnic (Humber) established Dedicated Education Units at Brampton Civic and Etobicoke General hospitals – integrating Osler's nursing expertise with Humber's evidence-based teaching methods. This partnership is an optimal clinical learning environment for nursing students and will support the growth and success of the nurses of the future. Osler’s annual Summer Student Research Program continued to provide future researchers the opportunity to hone their skills in an active hospital environment.
These future-focused partnerships with local postsecondary institutions will prepare our region’s future health care workforce to provide exemplary care for our diverse, growing communities for years to come.
