Building the new Peel Memorial
Osler continues to transform health care in Brampton. Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness (Peel Memorial) will transform into Brampton’s second hospital and help increase hospital and health care capacity in our community for years to come. As the population of Brampton and surrounding region continues to grow in size and diversity, we need a new hospital to help meet the needs of the community. See our fact sheet or infographic for more information.
Boost in health services for Brampton
The new Peel Memorial will include a multi-storey tower with 250 inpatient beds and space to build more in the future, and will also offer a range of outpatient services and day programs.
The Urgent Care Centre at Peel Memorial will transition to 24/7 service later in 2022, setting the stage for a second full Emergency Department in Brampton when the new hospital opens.
Meeting the needs of the community
The new hospital addresses the significant need for more specialized care for patients requiring longer hospital stays before they can safely return home or to care in the community. It will also help create more space for very sick patients at Brampton Civic Hospital.

Frequently asked questions
The new Peel Memorial |
What is the new Peel Memorial? The new Peel Memorial will be a multi-storey tower, with 250 inpatient beds when it opens and space to build more in the future. When combined with the outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging, surgery and other health services already operating on the Peel Memorial site, this will be a significant boost in services for patients in Brampton. Plans also include short-stay beds necessary to support an Emergency Department, and many new beds for patients recovering from an acute care stay who require specialized care before they can safely return home. Many of these patients currently occupy acute care beds at Brampton Civic Hospital that are badly needed for other patients, including those waiting in our busy Emergency Department. Both buildings at Peel Memorial will be connected to ensure safe and convenient access to services and programs. This represents an exciting step for Osler, Brampton and the surrounding community, and will support increased hospital and health care capacity for years to come. When will we see what the new Peel Memorial will actually look like? The current stage of planning focuses on the services that will be housed within Peel Memorial and the physical spaces needed to support them. As we advance to the next stage of the project – the preliminary design – in 2022, the community will see initial draft architectural renderings that will evolve as design and planning progresses. Once more detailed graphics are available, they will be shared broadly with the community through meetings and other opportunities to come together to discuss the project. Where will the new patient tower be built? The new patient tower will be built adjacent to the existing Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness. Both buildings at Peel Memorial will be connected to ensure safe and convenient access to all services and programs and will operate as one facility. When will shovels be in the ground and when will the new Peel Memorial open its doors?Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2023 and the hospital is anticipated to open its doors in 2027. The dates are subject to change. How will the community be engaged around the development of the new Peel Memorial?A number of community groups, Osler’s Patient and Family Advisory Council, patients and caregivers, as well as other individuals/groups have been important contributors to the development of the new Peel Memorial. The community has also been engaged through Telephone Town Hall meetings where the project has been discussed with opportunities for questions and input. We will continue to engage and seek ongoing input to help shape the design of the programs and bring the new hospital to life. We invite you to share your thoughts and ideas by completing a short survey that will help shape the new Peel Memorial. |
Local share |
Why is Osler asking the City of Brampton to help pay for the new Peel Memorial? In Ontario, the Government funds 90 per cent of hospital construction costs. Communities are responsible for the remaining 10 per cent, as well as covering all equipment costs – this is called the “local share”. About 70 per cent of hospital redevelopment projects in Ontario involve some form of municipal funding, and many larger municipalities use designated levies to fund a contribution. Osler is requesting municipal funding from the City of Brampton to support 50 per cent of the estimated local share for both the new Peel Memorial and the proposed cancer care centre to be located at Brampton Civic Hospital. In this year’s budget deliberations, the City of Brampton made a historic contribution of $62.5 million towards the estimated local share for Osler’s redevelopment priorities, including $20M raised through a previous tax levy. Community support is critical to ensure hospitals can continue to meet the current and future health care needs. Osler continues to work with its municipal partners, William Osler Health System Foundation, and the community towards reaching the project’s local share goal. |
Future hospital expansion |
What is Osler doing to advocate for a third hospital?Osler is proud to have set out an ambitious plan to transform Peel Memorial into Brampton’s new hospital. With continued and significant growth in the community, the hospital will have a significant positive impact on health care capacity, and set the stage for the eventual third hospital in Brampton. As health care services and infrastructure continue to be an important part of the City’s urban planning, we continue to engage with the City of Brampton and Ontario Government to advance these discussions. |
