Dr. Shira Brown, Corporate Chief of Emergency Medicine at William Osler Health System

Dr. Shira Brown, BMT MD CCFP(EM) FCFP EMBA, is the Corporate Chief of Emergency Medicine at William Osler Health System (Osler). After achieving her medical degree at the University of Manitoba, Dr. Brown completed her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Toronto, and her EMBA at Brown University and IE Business School. She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at McMaster University and Toronto Metropolitan University.

As the winter holidays draw near, it's crucial to plan ahead to stay safe and healthy. William Osler Health System’s Dr. Brown shares her tips for a safe and healthy holiday season:

Make a holiday health checklist

With the holiday season upon us, ensure you are prepared for your care needs. Know your doctor's holiday hours and arrange any necessary medical appointments in advance. Consult with your health care team about your care plan, and ensure you have their contact information in case you need it. Be sure to refill your medications and stock up on essential supplies (e.g., blood testing strips, hearing aid batteries, etc.) to avoid running out during the holidays.

Get your vaccines and practice good hygiene

The best way to protect yourself and those around you is by ensuring you’re up to date on your vaccines. This includes the flu and COVID-19 shots, as well as RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) preventative medication – particularly important for older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems. Cold and flu viruses spread easily during the holiday season, so washing your hands frequently is also essential. Stay home if you are not feeling well and wear a mask indoors or when around vulnerable individuals.

Know where to go for care in the community

Depending on the seriousness of your symptoms, available care options include family doctors and nurse practitioners, Virtual Urgent Care, Osler’s Urgent Care Centre, and Emergency Departments. Learn more about other health care options.

If you have a medical emergency, or aren’t sure, always go to the nearest Emergency Department or call 9-1-1 immediately.

Maintain healthy eating habits

The holidays often come with indulgent meals and treats, but it’s important to balance festive eating with healthy choices. When possible, choose nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains to support your immune system. Drinking plenty of water, limiting sugary drinks, and eating in moderation can help you feel your best throughout the season.

Stay active and get fresh air

Although the weather may be colder, try to stay active with winter activities like skating, skiing, or even a brisk walk in the park. Regular physical activity boosts your immune system, improves circulation, and helps you feel more energized. Don’t forget to dress appropriately if you're heading outside to enjoy the fresh air.
