Kevin Dalgliesh, Anaesthesia Assistant at Osler, poses in an operating room

In the dynamic and ever-evolving world of health care, the role of anaesthesia assistants has become increasingly important. These professionals play a crucial part in ensuring patient safety and comfort during surgical procedures. At Osler, anaesthesia assistants have been at the forefront of enhancing patient care and advancing team collaboration. Kevin Dalgliesh, an experienced anaesthesia assistant shares his experiences, insights and remarkable journey that led to his rewarding career at Osler.

From ambulance attendant to respiratory therapist to anaesthesia assistant: A remarkable journey

From his early days as a lifeguard to becoming a vital member of the Osler anaesthesia team, Kevin’s journey is one that showcases the power of perseverance and commitment to learn and embrace change.

“My journey into health care started during my teenage years when I worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor.”

Interacting with people in the realm of health and safety initially sparked Kevin’s interest in the health care field.

“This led me to pursue a career as an ambulance attendant for about a decade, which was undoubtedly exciting but also challenging.”

A personal shoulder injury redirected his career path, leading him to pursue and successfully become a skilled respiratory therapist.

After completing a three-year college program in respiratory therapy, Kevin gained valuable experience working at a downtown Toronto hospital. The concept of an anaesthesia assistant role was just taking shape and Kevin was at the forefront of its development. As one of the first anaesthesia assistants at University Health Network, Kevin played a pivotal role in shaping the position's responsibilities and impact in the operating room.

Inspired by the potential of introducing and developing the anaesthesia assistant role at Osler, Kevin embarked on a new chapter with the hospital, and has never looked back.

Teamwork and collaboration: The key to success

“Teamwork and collaboration lie at the heart of the operating room environment.” Kevin emphasizes the significance of effective communication and collaboration among health care professionals, from attendants to surgeons.

“I’ve had the privilege of forming meaningful connections and bonds with my colleagues, we’ve built a fun and collaborative environment not only for the staff but also for our patients so they feel supported during their time at Osler.”

One of the greatest privileges Kevin enjoys as an anaesthesia assistant is the chance to collaborate closely with skilled surgeons and anaesthesiologists. Working alongside these experienced professionals has been an invaluable resource, enriching his understanding and passion for his profession. Kevin is constantly learning from them, and as he gains more experience, he finds himself in a position to share his knowledge with younger doctors, creating a dynamic team and transfer of knowledge between team members at all levels.

Empowering patients through expertise

Kevin's wealth of experience and innovative ideas has led to significant advancements in the role of anaesthesia assistants. One standout concept Kevin supports with at Osler is the "Swing Room," a brilliant strategy for optimizing efficiency during orthopaedic surgeries. By orchestrating parallel processes, the surgeon enables and supports the anaesthesia assistants to finish up, allowing Kevin to take over from the anaesthesiologist while they begin the next procedure. This seamless transition allows for an increase in the number of surgeries performed in a day, benefiting both patients and the medical team.

Careers that go beyond

Having been with Osler for an impressive 15 years, Kevin can attest to its unwavering commitment to fostering professional development.

“Osler places immense value on the continuous growth of its staff, encouraging them to pursue additional training and credentials. They actively provide opportunities like sponsoring workshops and offering financial support for further education, creating an environment where employees can thrive and excel in their careers.”
