Mental health concerns are more widespread among those close to us than we often realize. William Osler Health System’s Clinical Team Lead with the Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program, Erin Stanners-Moroz, shares five tips on how to support your loved ones:
Know the signs of concern
Pay attention to changes in mood and social engagement, sleep or appetite. Subtle changes may indicate that your loved one is struggling and could benefit from professional support.
Listen without judgement
When having a conversation, let the other person talk openly without interrupting or offering solutions, and without judgement. This helps them feel more comfortable and helps build trust. Let your friends and family know that it’s okay to feel what they are feeling. Validation helps people feel seen and heard.
Support professional care and respect their pace
Seeking mental health support is not always easy. Offer your support with setting up appointments or navigating community and online resources. Everyone’s mental health journey is different – be patient and supportive. Accept that everyone moves at their own speed and pace.
Speak up against stigma
Challenge harmful stereotypes around mental health when you hear them. Be brave – your advocacy helps create a supportive environment for those dealing with mental concerns.
Take care of yourself
Supporting others can also impact your own mental health and wellbeing. Set healthy boundaries and reach out for support for yourself as well, if needed.
