Osler ‘rising stars’ receive Intrepid Leader award from the Brampton Board of Trade

William Osler Health System (Osler) is pleased to share that two physicians and a staff member are among this year’s recipients of Brampton Board of Trade’s prestigious Intrepid Leader award. The award is presented to individuals in the Brampton community who have been recognized by their colleagues and the Brampton Board of Trade as bold, brave and courageous leaders in their field.

On March 23, Osler’s Dr. Lillia Fung, Andreea Popescu and Dr. Jobin Varughese were recognized at a Brampton Board of Trade event celebrating young leaders making an impact in the community.

The Osler team members and their areas of work are:

• Dr. Lillia Fung, Obstetrical Anesthesia Site Lead, Brampton Civic Hospital: Dr. Fung has shown outstanding leadership in obstetrics quality control initiatives and in improving patient outcomes. When the COVID-19 pandemic unfolded, Dr. Fung immediately established COVID-19 protocols that would help ensure the safety and well-being of pregnant women in her care, their children and families, and her hospital colleagues.
• Andreea Popescu, Organizational Performance Consultant: Andreea’s work as part of Osler’s Strategy team supports departments across Osler to plan and prioritize the most impactful projects for the community, while strengthening informed decision-making and collaboration across the organization. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she built a COVID-19 projection model for Osler that predicted the third wave several weeks in advance. Andreea also supported large-scale pandemic response initiatives such as the opening of COVID-19 testing centres, creating staff redeployment models, and developing capacity plans to help manage patient volumes.
• Dr. Jobin Varughese, Site Director, Family Medicine, Residency Program: As a family physician who was raised and lives in Brampton, Dr. Varughese provides comprehensive care for patients, from newborns to seniors. His efforts to contribute to his profession are extensive and range from pursuing certifications and teaching new medical residents, to finding ways to improve the larger health care system and facilitating learning for physicians.
