Dignitaries pose for photo at 50th anniversary event

Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sylvia Jones, Minister of Infrastructure Kinga Surma and members of Toronto City Council among dignitaries recognizing hospital milestone

Today, William Osler Health System (Osler) welcomed the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health; the Honourable Kinga Surma, Minister of Infrastructure and MPP, Etobicoke Centre; and other dignitaries to Osler’s Etobicoke General Hospital to commemorate the hospital’s 50th anniversary and its incredible legacy of providing people-inspired health care without boundaries to the community.

“On behalf of the Ontario government, I would like to congratulate Etobicoke General Hospital and the entire team at William Osler Health System for reaching this significant milestone after 50 years of providing people-centred care,” said Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, Sylvia Jones. “We are grateful for a strong partnership with William Osler Health System, and will continue to work together to ensure residents of Etobicoke and surrounding communities can continue to access the care they need, when they need it.”

Opened in 1972 and now part of William Osler Health System, Etobicoke General has had a long-standing commitment of delivering exemplary care to the north Etobicoke community and surrounding region. Recognized at the time as ‘Canada’s most modern community hospital’, Etobicoke General achieved world-wide attention for its innovation and design, and has been home to many provincial and national health care ‘firsts’ including the first finger implantation in Ontario in the 1970s and Canada’s first laparoscopic hysterectomy in the 1980s. It is also a ‘first responder’ hospital for local, national and international travelers given its close proximity to Pearson International Airport, Canada’s largest and busiest airport.

Today Etobicoke General is a leading community hospital offering a range of services and sees close to 16,000 inpatients and over 120,000 outpatient visits each year. The hospital provides vital health services close to home including renal care, surgery, chronic disease management, stroke recovery, diagnostic imaging, and critical care.

“For half a century, Etobicoke General Hospital has been a place where this community has come to receive life-saving care, to welcome children and grandchildren, and to prevent and manage chronic conditions, serving as a pillar of strength and support to so many,” said Linda Franklin, Board Chair, William Osler Health System. “But Etobicoke General is not just a hospital. It is a cornerstone of this community – a hospital built thanks to the dedication of its local supporters, and one that continues to thrive due to the unwavering commitment and dedication of our government partners, our frontline heroes and our community supporters.”

To meet the growing needs of the community, Osler opened Etobicoke General’s new Etobicoke Wellness Centre in 2018, and a bright, spacious four-storey patient tower just a year later. The patient tower added approximately 250,000 square feet to the hospital and encompasses an expanded emergency department, critical care unit, modern birthing suites, an ambulatory procedures unit, medical clinics, and a combined cardiac, respiratory and neurodiagnostic outpatient unit. The Etobicoke Wellness Centre has provided expanded outpatient and support services including a new fracture clinic, diagnostic imaging services, dialysis care and a pre-anaesthesia clinic.

“The driving force behind Etobicoke General’s incredible 50-year legacy is its people – the staff, physicians and volunteers – many of whom have dedicated their entire careers to caring for the diverse health needs of this community,” said Dr. Frank Martino, President and CEO, William Osler Health System. “The team’s commitment to patients and their passion for delivering compassionate, exemplary care remains steadfast. We thank our many government, health system and academic partners, our donors, and our community for their ongoing support of Etobicoke General Hospital and its health care teams over the past 50 years, and look forward to continuing to serve this growing region for years to come.”

“For 50 years, the citizens of Etobicoke have been committed to supporting exemplary health care close to home,” said Ken Mayhew, President & CEO, William Osler Health System Foundation. “Osler Foundation is grateful for the community’s generosity, which has helped build Etobicoke General into the outstanding hospital it is today.”
