Heena, an Ultrasound Technologist, stands with an ultrasound machine

William Osler Health System (Osler) has been more than just a workplace for Heena – it has been a cornerstone of her professional and personal development. Heena, an Ultrasound Technologist, has been a dedicated full-time employee at Osler’s Brampton Civic Hospital for the past 11 years. Her journey at Osler, however, began much earlier, rooted in a deep desire to blend her love for health care and technology.

From volunteer to professional

Heena came to Osler as a teenager, volunteering at Brampton Civic. The environment fascinated her, and this initial exposure fueled her passion for health care. She transitioned from a volunteer to an ultrasound student at Osler’s Etobicoke General Hospital in 2011, and upon graduation, joined the Brampton Civic as an employee the very next day!

Professional growth and support

As a new graduate, Heena received hands-on training and mentorship, allowing her to gain specialized knowledge and skills. “When you graduate, you just know the basics,” Heena reflects. “Osler provided me with opportunities to specialize in different areas, and I received full support from my leadership team.” This support extended beyond on-the-job training; Heena was also encouraged to pursue further education and was reimbursed for courses and exams, reinforcing Osler’s commitment to professional development. Heena recognizes that Osler’s culture of continuous learning has been a significant factor in her career growth and job satisfaction. “I appreciate the monthly virtual rounds offered by Osler, where radiologists discuss various topics, helping staff stay abreast of the latest advancements in health care.”

Personal growth and community connection

Beyond professional growth, Osler has contributed to Heena’s personal development. She speaks fondly of the diverse and inclusive environment at Brampton Civic, which mirrors the multicultural fabric of the city itself. “Our department is very diverse, just like Brampton. Staff members speak so many different languages, and they all come from various cultures and different walks of life and experience levels. I’ve learned a lot from my colleagues, including recognizing and practicing culturally sensitive patient care.” Heena’s commitment to her community is evident in her desire to give back, “having grown up and studied in Brampton, I find immense satisfaction in serving my local community, it reinforces my sense of belonging and purpose.”

Making a meaningful difference

Heena’s journey at Osler has come full circle as she draws on her own experience to guide and mentor new students. She understands the challenges and anxieties that students face and uses her insights to provide support and training. An example of the supportive culture Heena experiences herself at Osler was during a young patient undergoing a breast biopsy. The patient, accompanied by her three-month-old baby, faced childcare challenges during the procedure. Demonstrating the flexibility and compassionate spirit of her team, Heena and a colleague arranged to look after the infant, relieving the patient’s stress and supporting the procedure. “These simple acts of kindness highlight the compassionate care and collaborative team spirit at Osler, and that’s why I love working here.”

Careers that go beyond

Heena is a strong advocate for working at Osler and emphasizes the excellent professional development opportunities, supportive environment, and the personal well-being initiatives available, such as yoga sessions during breaks. “Osler offers so many opportunities for growth and learning, making it an excellent place to work.” Heena also values the state-of-the-art technology available to her particularly the top-notch ultrasound machines, which enable her to provide the best care possible to her patients.

Are you ready to join Heena?

Reflecting on her journey, Heena feels immense gratitude for her time with Osler. “I started here as a student and I have also been a patient here. Osler is my hospital.”
