Samantha Baker, Medical Laboratory Technologist at Osler, poses in front of a microscope

In the dynamic world of health care, where precision and collaboration are paramount, the role of medical laboratory technologists (MLTs) has never been more crucial. Meet Samantha Baker, a dedicated MLT who works across hospitals at Osler. Samantha's journey captures the essence of teamwork, professional development, and the unparalleled opportunities Osler offers to health care professionals.

From aspiration to achievement

Samantha's passion for health care and science led her to pursue a career in pathology. She began her journey with Osler back in 2021, and within just two and a half years, she has flourished professionally. Starting part-time, Samantha quickly progressed into a full-time role and is now the senior designate within the department. “My decision to join Osler was deliberate, I was drawn to its status as a large health system with busy hospitals. What intrigued me further was the multi-site nature of the position, offering a dynamic, fast-paced environment with ample opportunities for professional growth.” Osler's commitment to professional development enabled Samantha to hone her technical skills, validate procedures, and become a primary trainer in the lab. “My experience truly reflects Osler's dedication to nurturing talent and fostering career advancement opportunities.”

A culture of collaboration and support

“What sets Osler apart is its commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration and teamwork.” Within Osler's Pathology Department, Samantha has found a vibrant and collaborative environment, where MLTs, medical lab assistants, and pathologist assistants work in partnership to provide exceptional patient care. “Not one role can be done without the other. We have a great teamwork dynamic within the department and at Osler as a whole.” Furthermore, Samantha feels supported by Osler’s commitment to employee development through continuing education programs. “My leadership informs me about Osler’s continuing education programs and when I expressed interest in pursuing additional qualifications, including becoming a pathology assistant, I received full support from my supervisors.”

Make a meaningful difference

Samantha’s experience highlights the transformative impact Osler has on both its employees and the community it serves. My most memorable patient story is when during a routine procedure, our pathologist assistant found incidental cancer in the specimen. Luckily, the cancer was fully removed, preventing further harm to the patient. From detecting incidental findings that lead to life-saving interventions to fostering a culture of innovation and excellence, Samantha emphasizes “Osler is more than just a workplace—it's a place where individuals can make a meaningful difference.”

Careers that go beyond

Samantha emphasizes the organization's supportive culture and abundant growth opportunities. “Osler is a great place to learn and develop your career. The leadership is super supportive, and there's so much opportunity to grow here. The team synergy and patient-centered focus make Osler an ideal choice for those passionate about growth and community impact.”
