Today, William Osler Health System (Osler) celebrated the official opening of its new Academic Learning Centre at Brampton Civic Hospital with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, marking an important milestone in clinical education and the future health care workforce serving the region.
The event was attended by the Honourable Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health, and local Members of Provincial Parliament who offered remarks. They were joined by leaders from Osler, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), medical learners, and the community to recognize Osler’s commitment to workforce development, education and innovation.
The new Academic Learning Centre provides a modern, dedicated space for residents and learners to collaborate, study and train at Brampton Civic Hospital, strengthening Osler’s role as a leading teaching hospital system. A second Academic Learning Centre at Etobicoke General Hospital is scheduled to open later this year, further enhancing Osler’s capacity to train the next generation of physicians.
“This new Academic Learning Centre is an important addition to our sites, and a significant support to the medical learners who will deliver care in our communities for years to come,” said Dr. Frank Martino, President and CEO, William Osler Health System. “As our region continues to grow, so does the need to support high-quality clinical education. By creating purpose-built learning environments, we are helping residents and learners thrive, which ultimately leads to world-class health care for patients and families.”
With a strong history of supporting physician and clinician training and as the primary clinical partner of TMU’s School of Medicine, Osler plays a leading role in advancing medical education in Ontario. Designed to foster collaboration, reflection and professional development, the Academic Learning Centre supports learners as they gain hands-on experience in Osler’s fast-paced hospital environment and reflects its long-term strategy to attract and retain future physicians in the community.
“Strong learning environments are essential to developing confident, capable physicians,” said Dr. Hemant Shah, Vice President, Academics, William Osler Health System. “This Centre gives our residents and learners a dedicated space to train, connect, and grow along with participating in vital hands-on experience with our health care teams. Investments like this elevate the educational experience and help ensure we are preparing the next generation of clinicians to serve our diverse and dynamic communities.”
The celebration featured remarks from Osler leaders and guests, followed by guided tours of the new learning space. Two medical residents training at Osler’s hospitals also shared how access to dedicated educational facilities enhances training, collaboration and well-being.
