Going Beyond for our community: Our Values in action
At Osler, we live our Values every day to Go Beyond for our communities. In a year that tried and tested us all, our Values were a guiding light, steering and inspiring us to deliver on our Vision of patient-inspired health care without boundaries for our patients and families.
You can see our Values in action in our special year-in-review video and read about our extraordinary year in our executive messages.
A message from Osler’s Interim President and CEO and Osler’s Board Chair |
While Osler and its communities faced another historically challenging year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the constants that continued to inspire and guide us was our Values. From the boardroom to the bedside, our Values truly define not only what we do, but who we are as an organization. In 2021-22 we continued to put our Values into action, every day. And the results speak for themselves. In a year that saw us balancing the complexities of the pandemic while continuing to advance future health care initiatives, our teams embodied what it means to go beyond to deliver on our Vision of patient-inspired health care without boundaries. Thanks to the ingenuity and innovation of our talented workforce, Osler became a leader in COVID-19 data modeling and was able to predict and plan our pandemic response so we could be there for our communities. Our COVID @ home program, which remotely monitors patients who are newly diagnosed or recently discharged after hospitalization with COVID-19, continued to grow, helping to keep patients out of the hospital. We proudly worked across boundaries with government, health system partners, Osler Foundation and generous donors to ensure that every patient in our hard-hit communities had access to care. Maintaining our focus on excellence, we launched a three-year journey to become a globally-recognized Best Practice Spotlight Organization (BPSO), further bolstering our commitment to deliver the highest standards of care and support the best possible outcomes. Dedicated to creating a culture of community and belonging for everyone who receives or provides care at Osler, we launched a refreshed respectful workplace program and brought together an anti-discrimination core action group, building on Osler’s long-standing commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion. While navigating the challenges of the pandemic, we also made significant progress in moving health care in our communities forward. With our government partners, we advanced plans to transform Peel Memorial into Brampton’s new hospital and enhance cancer care services in our region to meet the growing need. It was also announced that, in partnership with Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson University), Brampton will be home to an innovative new medical school that will teach and train the clinicians and physicians of the future. As we close out 2021-22, we thank the many people both within and outside Osler who helped us deliver on our Mission of innovative health care delivered with compassion. We continue to move ahead with confidence knowing that, with our Values to lead us, we will rise to every challenge and never stop working to improve health care within and beyond our walls. Dr. Frank Martino, Interim President and CEO; and Geoffrey Ritchie, Board Chair |
A message from Osler’s clinical leadership |
Behind the mask of every staff member, physician or volunteer at Osler is someone who gave the very best of themselves this past year to ensure that every patient who came through our doors continued to receive quality care, even under the most challenging of circumstances. While their faces weren’t completely visible, their commitment to living Osler’s Values was on full display. They persevered through multiple waves of COVID-19 to deliver compassionate care to patients from the hardest hit communities in the province. They helped families connect virtually with hospitalized loved ones when it wasn’t possible for them to visit in person, and welcomed them back to the hospital when it was safe to do so. Our teams never stopped going beyond for our patients, their families and one another, doing everything possible to deliver excellent care, including training for new roles, covering extra shifts, or working in other areas of the hospital. They developed a further and deep appreciation for valued Osler partners, peer hospitals across the province, community agencies, and health care colleagues from near and far, all of whom stepped in to help provide vital care to patients. Working in collaboration with our public health, municipal, provincial and community partners, Osler staff and physicians also played an extraordinary role in protecting the community and helping to prevent hospitalizations by administering 267,761 vaccines through Osler’s COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics in 2021-22. Underscoring their relentless commitment to excellence, our teams carried out their work with respect and dignity, supporting the complex needs of patients with COVID-19 while also working to carefully and gradually resume some priority non-urgent surgeries and procedures. We feel privileged to lead such an incredibly skilled and values-driven organization. If you look beyond the masks in our 2021-22 Annual Report video, you’ll discover a team of resilient, innovative and compassionate individuals whom we couldn’t be more proud to call our colleagues. Dr. Brian Klar, Interim Chief of Staff; Kiki Ferrari, Chief Operating Officer; and Tiziana Rivera, Vice President, Quality and Chief Nursing Executive |
