The new school year is an exciting time for children and families, but it can also bring feelings of stress, anxiety and uncertainty. Supporting mental health during this time can help children, teens and parents feel more confident, connected and prepared for the months ahead. William Osler Health System's Dr. Needa Khan shares five tips to help families navigate the back-to-school season with greater ease and resilience.

Ease into new routines

Predictable routines can help children and teens feel more secure during times of change. In the weeks leading up to the first day of school, gradually adjust wake-up times, bedtimes and meal schedules to help make the transition smoother and reduce stress.

Use simple tools to make mornings easier

Simple checklists for backpacks, lunches and school supplies can help set a positive a relaxed environment and encourage children to take ownership of age-appropriate responsibilities. Keeping reminders in a shared space can also help the whole family stay on track!

Observe, listen, engage and support

The change in routine is a great time to observe how your child adapts to new challenges and experiences. Take this opportunity to listen and talk with your child about their feelings. Ask open-ended questions, listen without judgment, and remind them that it's okay to feel nervous, excited or a mix of both. Creating space for regular conversations can help children feel supported and more comfortable sharing concerns.

Protect time for rest and connection

The school year is filled with activities, homework and new challenges. But time to relax and connect as a family is also very important for the entire home. Plan family time and make it a priority to reduce stress, improve mood, and support overall mental well-being.

Focus on progress, not perfection

Every child adjusts to a new school year differently. Celebrate effort, resilience and small successes rather than expect everything to go perfectly. A little encouragement can go a long way to help children feel more confident.
