Why did I get a bill?

Depending on your insurance coverage, needs and choices, you may be billed for some expenses. Please see below to learn more.

Public hospitals are funded by:

  • taxes paid by those who live and work in Ontario, and
  • an annual Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) premium. This is paid by Ontario residents for insured health care services.

If you have a valid Ontario health card, OHIP will pay for most of the health care services you receive.

Many people also have private health insurance coverage. If you have a private health insurance plan, it may cover what OHIP does not. Read your plan carefully to understand what is included.

You will be charged before or during your visit for any procedures, services or medical devices not covered by OHIP. You are also responsible for any charges during your stay. These may include:

Room charges: Semi-private and private rooms cost more. You are billed for room fees not covered by your insurance.

Medical devices and supplies: Fees apply for medical devices and supplies such as crutches, casts, tensor bandages, splints, etc.

Non-urgent transport: You are responsible for paying your transportation costs when discharged from hospital.

Ambulance: Most Ontarians with a valid health card are charged an ambulance service fee of $45.00. For all fees and exemptions, visit the Ministry of Health's website.

Fees also apply for:

  • digital copies of diagnostic or ultrasound images for personal use
  • procedures that change or restore your appearance but do not treat life-threatening conditions (i.e. cosmetic procedures)

Fees not covered by OHIP apply to all patients. This includes patients with a health card, Canadian residents, uninsured patients and international visitors. If you have private insurance, your plan may cover the costs of some of these services. Please contact your insurance company for details.

If you do not have proof of or are ineligible for Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) coverage or similar coverage from another Province/Territory of Canada or Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) benefits:

  • Osler will provide emergency care for conditions that are considered an immediate and serious threat to life, a body part or vital organs. You will be responsible for paying for the costs for your care.
  • Osler will not provide elective care (non-emergency care) unless the care is approved by the hospital at its discretion due to exceptional circumstances. If approved, advance payment is required. In general, we do not provide elective treatment to uninsured patients.
  • Osler will not provide care that is considered medical tourism e.g. travelling from outside Canada to receive care at one of our hospitals.
  • During registration for services, all uninsured patients must complete a Governing Law and Jurisdiction Agreement form and an Agreement for Provision of Health Services form and will be informed of costs associated with the care.

Please note there is a fee for ambulance services. Learn more about your options.

You may request a private, semi-private or standard room. Depending on your choice, additional fees may apply. Learn more about your room options.

If you are injured at work, you should notify the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB).

  • If your treatment at Osler is related to a work injury, you must provide your WSIB claim number when you are treated.
  • If you are treated in the Emergency Department for a work-related injury, please report the incident to your employer so your claim can be processed. If you have any questions, call us at 905-494-2120 ext. 29918 (last name A-M) or ext. 29127 (last name N-Z).

If you have a health card from another province or territory in Canada, most health care services you receive in Ontario will be covered. When you arrive at Osler, provide:

  • your home address
  • your provincial or territorial health card
  • the expiry date of the card

If you have any questions, call us at 905-494-2120 ext. 29127.

If you have lost your health card, learn how you can replace it.

If you are covered by the Interim Federal Health Program, you must tell our registration clerk when you arrive and provide a copy of your refugee papers. We require a proof of eligibility document which includes your Unique Client Identification number (UCI).
