  • dialysis

Kidney care at Osler

Our services are truly inspired by the needs of our patients. We:

  • connect you with the services and supports you need, both here and at our partner facilities
  • support and follow your progress every step of the way
  • offer services such as home dialysis, when possible, to promote a flexible, independent lifestyle

This clinic aims to slow the progress of kidney disease and prevent other health problems that can occur when kidneys are not working well.

Our specialized team includes nephrologists and renal registered nurses, social workers, pharmacists and dietitians. Together, we are here to meet your individual care needs.

We:

  • will explain your treatment options if your kidney disease does progress and guide you to choose the type of dialysis that best fits your lifestyle. Many options are available, and we are here to support you.
  • offer psychosocial support and palliative care to patients with end-stage renal disease who choose not to have renal replacement therapies or a kidney transplant.
  • explore pre-emptive transplant options (e.g. a kidney transplant before going on dialysis) with you, as appropriate.

Referrals

Osler nephrologists refer patients to this program.

Our home dialysis program includes both home peritoneal dialysis and home hemodialysis. It supports patients and their families in carrying out home-based dialysis independently, in the comfort of their home while monitored by a renal health care team.

Home dialysis can help people achieve a higher quality of life, since it is less disruptive than frequent hospital visits and promotes a flexible, independent lifestyle.

Things you should know:

  • Equipment and supplies are provided and delivered to your home. These costs are covered by the Ontario Ministry of Health.
  • Our team of nurses and renal technologists provides technical services and education so you can carry out treatments at home.
  • You may experience increased water and electricity costs.
  • You may need to make some modifications to your home, but these costs are usually covered by the Ministry of Health.

All home dialysis patients come to Brampton Civic or the Etobicoke Wellness Centre's home dialysis clinic about every six weeks. You will be assessed by the renal team and your treatment modified if necessary.

If you have any difficulties, a home dialysis nurse and a renal technologist are available to support you 24 hours a day, seven days a week. To reach them:

  • Brampton Civic
Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
    905-494-2120 ext. 50545
After hours and on holidays, call 905-494-2120 ext. 34567 and ask to have the on-call home peritoneal dialysis nurse paged.
  • Etobicoke Renal Centre
Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
    416-747-3400 ext. 32811
After hours and on holidays, call 905-494-2120 ext. 34567 and ask to have the on-call home peritoneal dialysis nurse paged.

Referrals

Osler nephrologists can refer patients interested in home dialysis to the home dialysis program.

Through our in-centre hemodialysis program, a team of renal specialists provides ongoing monitoring, care and support for each patient.

This service is available at three Osler locations:

  • Brampton Civic
54 dialysis stations (45 on the third level and nine on the main floor)
    Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
    905-494-2120 ext. 56580
  • Peel Memorial
    15 dialysis stations
    Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m.
    905-494-2120 ext. 22565
  • Etobicoke Renal Centre
15 stations with plans to expand to 30 (located on the third level)

We are currently unable to accept transient (vacationing) hemodialysis patients.

Nephrology patients admitted to hospital will be assigned to the inpatient unit that best meets their illness or condition.

No matter which unit you stay on, you will be followed by a hospitalist, a nephrologist and other health care experts, as needed. These services are offered at Brampton Civic and Etobicoke General 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Vascular access is a way to reach your blood so it can be cleaned during dialysis.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) access

Osler has a dedicated team of surgeons to insert PD catheters. A PD access clinic at Brampton Civic provides consultation and follow up for this procedure.

Hemodialysis (HD) access

Patients with progressing (stage 5) chronic kidney disease need to have a vascular access created. This is the site on your body where blood is removed and returned during hemodialysis.

Ideally, this occurs several months before beginning hemodialysis treatment. Early preparation allows the access site to “mature,” so it is ready for use when hemodialysis treatment is needed.

There are three types of vascular access for hemodialysis: graft, fistula or central venous catheter. Our team includes vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists and vascular registered nurses who specialize in creating and maintaining these access points.
