Mental Health Services for Adults

Emergency and crisis services are for people in a crisis due to mental illness and/or substance abuse.

After you are treated in one of our Emergency Departments, you will receive follow-up care or support either at the hospital or through one of our community-based partners.

Referrals

You do not need a doctor's referral for emergency or mental health crisis services.

We offer inpatient mental health services at both Etobicoke General and Brampton Civic:

Brampton Civic

Four adult inpatient units at Brampton Civic assess and treat adults with major mental illnesses:

  • a 12-bed intensive unit treats for the most acutely ill patients who arrive from the Emergency Department
  • the 20-bed “Gen B” unit primarily offers acute treatment for patients with mood and anxiety disorders
  • the 20-bed “Gen C” unit provides acute treatment primarily for patients with schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
  • the 12-bed geriatric mental health unit provides acute treatment for seniors with major mental disorders

Referrals

Patients are referred to these units through the Emergency Department.

Hours

24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Etobicoke General

At Etobicoke General, a 20-bed adult inpatient unit assesses and treats adults with major mental illnesses.

Patients are referred to this unit through the Emergency Department.

Hours

24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Intensive outpatient mental health care may be offered:

  • as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization
  • in follow-up to an inpatient admission

We provide services for individual experiencing concerns related to mood and anxiety as well as psychosis and schizophrenia. These services are available at both Brampton Civic and Etobicoke General.

Referrals

Referrals may be made by psychiatrists or family physicians.

Osler offers a wide variety of adult mental health outpatient services Brampton Civic, Etobicoke General and Peel Memorial. We also have a partnership with Queens Square Family Health Team.

Psychotherapy is provided using a “stepped care” model, which places the patient at the level of care relevant to their needs. Service is primarily delivered via group therapy. We provide a limited number of individual sessions to prepare patients for the group experience.

Services offered are primarily group therapy delivered virtually.

Referrals

A psychiatrist or family physician can refer you to these services. The referral may be for a consultation, consultation and treatment, or telephone advice, depending on your needs.

Our eating disorders clinic treats adults, children, adolescents and youth with mild to moderate eating disorders. We are dedicated to helping you:

  • eliminate or reduce symptoms of eating disorders
  • develop coping strategies to manage the anxiety of this change

We work collaboratively with physicians and mental health professionals to help you achieve these goals.

Please note: as eating disorders are associated with serious medical complications, patients who participate in our program must be assessed as medically stable by their family doctor.

Services include:

  • assessment and diagnosis
  • family-based treatment for children and adolescents
  • nutritional consultation
  • psychoeducation and psychotherapy group intervention
  • medical monitoring, in collaboration with your family physician
  • psychiatric consultation services

Clinic services are provided by a team that includes the following professionals:

  • nurse practitioner
  • psychologist
  • dietitian
  • social worker
