Am I in Labour?

A guide for coming to the hospital after 37 weeks

Use this guide once you are 37 weeks gestation. If you are less than 37 weeks with any of these concerns, go to either the Labour and Delivery Unit at Brampton Civic Hospital or Birthing Unit at Etobicoke General Hospital for assessment.

If you are concerned at any point and would like to be assessed, visit either the Labour and Delivery Unit at Brampton Civic Hospital or Birthing Unit at Etobicoke General Hospital.

Come to the hospital if you experience any of the following:

  • Leaking fluid or a gush of fluid coming from your vagina
  • Painful contractions every five minutes, lasting for one minute, for over one hour
  • Bright red bleeding
  • Bleeding that is pink or brown in colour, accompanied by contractions
  • Less than six fetal movements in a two-hour period

Early labour

If you aren't experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, you may be in early labour. This stage of labour can last anywhere from hours to days. You may experience any of the following:

  • Contractions that come and go (irregular), lasting less than a minute
  • Mild or moderate cramping
  • Dull or achy lower back pain
  • Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Pinkish/brown discharge or mucous

Early labour comfort tips:

  • Eat light meals and drink plenty of fluids – to keep your energy up
  • Rest when possible – save energy for active labour
  • Go for a walk – movement can help labour progress
  • Gentle massage – lower back, shoulders or feet
  • Warm shower, bath, or compress – the heat can relax muscles and ease pain
  • Dim the lights and listen to music – distraction helps pass the time
