Breast Diagnostic Assessment Program

As part of a multidisciplinary clinic at Osler, the Breast Diagnostic Assessment Program (DAP) rapidly diagnoses breast conditions and supports patients. A dedicated Osler health care team works with primary care physicians to manage and coordinate care.

The DAP consists of:

  • Rapid diagnostic phase
  • Breast support clinic

Osler’s Ontario Breast Screening Program is a top performer in Ontario. Cancer Care Ontario has recognized Osler for significantly reducing the time from cancer suspicion to diagnosis and expediting treatment. Patients in this program have access to a team of Osler radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, and medical and radiation oncologists. A dedicated nurse navigator will arrange rapid consultation and treatment if a biopsy is indicated. The nurse navigator will also provide education and guide patients through care transitions, while keeping the primary care physician informed of the patient’s progress.

The DAP fast track process

  1. Primary care physician refers patient to Osler for breast diagnostic imaging (e.g. mammogram) or biopsy
  2. Radiologist reviews imaging and orders additional views as required
  3. Patients with suspicious lesions have same day or expedited biopsy and referred to the DAP
  4. DAP nurse navigator will triage and schedule appointments
  5. Post biopsy consult with breast surgeon will be scheduled to take place within 7-14 days
  6. All patients positive for cancer will meet with surgeon, medical/radiation oncologists the same day to plan treatment
  7. Further tests will be arranged through the nurse navigator
  8. Education, psychosocial assistance as well as supports will be facilitated by the nurse navigator
  9. Patient is followed through the entire cancer care journey with updates provided to or accessible by the primary care physician

The DAP is available at both Brampton Civic and Etobicoke General. Physician requisition forms and referral information can be found in our Find a Doctor of Service directory.
