Osler awarded Exemplary Standing, the highest designation by Accreditation Canada

William Osler Health System (Osler) is among a group of select hospitals in Canada to receive ‘Accredited with Exemplary Standing’ designation from Accreditation Canada. This recognition is the highest possible designation and confirms Osler’s commitment to safety and continuous quality improvement. It is also especially significant, coming after the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic where Osler was one of the hardest-hit health systems in the province.

“I am incredibly proud of everyone at Osler for their dedication and contributions to becoming an organization that is Accredited with Exemplary Standing,” said Dr. Frank Martino, Interim President and CEO, William Osler Health System. “This achievement is a testament to the collective commitment, hard work, and resilience of all our staff, physicians and volunteers in providing safe, quality and compassionate care, and speaks to our reputation as a leading community hospital in this province and beyond.”

Accreditation Canada is an independent, not-for-profit organization that sets standards for quality and safety in health care, accrediting health organizations in Canada and around the world. Voluntary participation in the accreditation process allows Osler to identify where it is excelling and where it has opportunities to further enhance its approaches to quality and patient safety based on globally recognized, evidence-based best practices, so that the patients and the communities Osler serves can be confident that they are receiving the best possible care.

Following an extensive on-site assessment, the surveyors described Osler as a ‘think outside the box’ organization and highlighted a number of its accomplishments, including its sustained quality focus across the entire organization; using data to drive quality improvement initiatives; staff and physicians that are resilient, adaptable, flexible, creative and engaged; good collaboration and connectivity between medical leadership and frontline staff; and standardization of processes across all sites.

This outstanding recognition is a reflection of Osler’s long-standing commitment to quality excellence and patient safety. Achieving Exemplary Standing represents a key milestone in Osler’s ongoing quality journey and its efforts in providing the best possible patient experience for its growing community.
