Osler launches Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Care Program

William Osler Health System (Osler), with support from the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, is increasing access to specialized cancer care services by launching a new Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Cancer Care Program.

Designed specifically for adolescents and young adults aged 18 to 39, the AYA Cancer Care Program recognizes that a cancer diagnosis during this stage of life brings unique clinical and psychosocial challenges. The newly launched program will provide tailored support information, assistance with patients navigating critical life transitions including education and career transitions, family planning and relationships. Through a comprehensive, people-centred approach the program will provide guidance and resources related to psychosocial well-being, sexual health and body image, and other significant life milestones unique to this group. This ensures that young patients receive the care and support they need throughout their cancer journey.

“A cancer diagnosis is difficult at any age, however patients aged 18 to 39 face unique challenges,” said Dr. Parneet Cheema, Medical Director, Oncology Program and Head of Cancer Research at William Osler Health System. “The Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Care Program is designed to address these challenges, and to ensure access to specialized care and supports across clinical, psychological and fertility concerns.”

Available services and supports as part of the program:

  • System navigation and education
  • Fertility preservation
  • Mental health support and counselling
  • Sexual health and body image counselling
  • Healthy behaviours and substance use
  • School and work transitions
  • Exercise and rehabilitation support
  • Survivorship

Patients are encouraged to consult with their oncology team or oncologist for more information.

“The new Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program ensures that young people receive care that is truly tailored to their unique needs, helping them navigate treatment while preserving their quality of life, identity, and future aspirations,” said Carole Moore, Vice President, Clinical Services at William Osler Health System. “We are grateful to the Paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario for their support in bringing this program to our communities and helping Osler achieve our Mission to provide innovative health care delivered with compassion.”
