This summer, 15 post-secondary students had the opportunity to learn new research methods, gain experience and work alongside Osler researchers and leaders on a range of hospital-based clinical and related research projects at Brampton Civic Hospital, Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness, and Etobicoke General Hospital.

On August 27, the students’ work was showcased bringing the hospital community, government and post-secondary partners together to congratulate the students on their outstanding research contributions. Osler welcomed Brampton Members of Parliament Sonia Sidhu and Maninder Sidhu to bring greetings and celebrate the success of Osler’s research students. Dr. Steven Liss, who serves as Vice President, Research and Innovation, at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) as well as Interim Scientific Director of Research at Osler Research Institute for Health Innovation, also joined in the event.

Student research positions are supported through funding from Employment and Social Development Canada’s summer jobs fund with additional support from TMU.

The 2024 research projects covered an impressive range of topics, including stroke care, emergency medicine, newborn and seniors health, stem cell transplantation and oncology. The top three presentations were awarded to the following students:

  • First place: Tanya Puri
Poster title: Ensuring sound beginnings: a quality initiative for tracking newborn hearing screenings post-discharge
  • Second place: Tazeen Hemraj
Poster title: Identifying predictive risk factors for hospital-acquired pressure injuries: a retrospective case-control study
  • Third place: Jazlyn Garcha and Gianmarco Ferrari
