People of Peel Memorial: Denis MacDougall, patient

Brampton resident Denis MacDougall knows a thing or two about health care.

For decades, health and fitness have been a cornerstone of Denis’ life, and he is an avid runner. He also has over 40 years of service as a health care professional and leader, including as Acting President of Peel Memorial in 1990/91. Today, Denis continues to give back to the community he calls home, greeting patients and families as one of Osler’s dedicated Peel Memorial volunteers. Denis can relate firsthand to the patients he meets everyday walking through the doors of Peel Memorial – he was one himself not too long ago.

In 2016, an ultrasound revealed a shocking 95 per cent blockage in his carotid artery. Three days later he underwent emergency surgery. Denis will never forget his surgeon’s words: “I’ll treat you like my own father.” So the surgeon did, operating on Denis and giving him a second chance at life.

“Living in Brampton, I’m lucky to call our local hospital my own. The care here is second to none, and I am grateful and deeply moved by the compassionate, expert care from every Osler team member,” said Denis, whose health care journey didn’t end with his surgery. He was later diagnosed with an irregular heart rhythm, which Osler’s skilled cardiac team monitors closely with annual tests.

“I’m grateful beyond words. Osler gave me more time with my loved ones, more days to live fully, and for that, I will always be thankful,” said Denis.

For Denis, Osler is so much more than a hospital – it’s a lifeline, a place where world-class care meets community need, and a place that helps patients, like Denis, continue living their lives to the fullest.

“Though I am now retired, I still have a passion for giving back to Osler, greeting patients and families as a volunteer every week at Peel Memorial. I see firsthand the difference that Peel Memorial has and continues to make – and I am proud to have been a part of its 100-year legacy," said Denis.
