World-class prostate cancer treatment now closer to home at Osler

New Radioligand Therapy at Osler provides eligible patients with advanced prostate cancer access to care in their own community

William Osler Health System (Osler) is expanding access to world-class cancer treatment for eligible patients with advanced prostate cancer – one of only eight hospitals in Ontario designated by Cancer Care Ontario to deliver Pluvicto® Radioligand Therapy.

Radioligand Therapy is a targeted cancer treatment that uses a small amount of radioactive material attached to a 'linker' molecule that seeks out and attaches itself to cancer cells, delivering radiation directly to the tumour while limiting damage to healthy tissue.

“Radioligand Therapy offers eligible patients with advanced and aggressive prostate cancer a path to better symptom control, less pain and fewer side effects compared with other chemotherapies,” said Dr. Marco Iafolla, Division Head of Medical Oncology, William Osler Health System. “For many patients, this therapy offers a real opportunity for more time with their families and an improved quality of life.”

Radioligand Therapy is not suitable for every patient with prostate cancer. Specialized imaging tests and scans are required to determine whether the treatment is appropriate. Like many other therapies, it requires patients to meet specific clinical criteria.

“Advanced diagnostic imaging plays an important role in delivering more precise, personalized cancer care,” said Dr. Danny Costantini, Nuclear Medicine Physician Lead, William Osler Health System. “The leading-edge Radioligand Therapy at Osler is helping eligible patients in our community access this highly specialized treatment.”

The introduction of Radioligand Therapy at Osler reflects the hospital’s continued commitment to expanding access to leading-edge technologies for advanced precision cancer care for patients in the community.

“For patients facing advanced prostate cancer, receiving specialized care close to home can make a meaningful difference during an already challenging time,” said Carole Moore, Vice President, Clinical Services, William Osler Health System. “By bringing Radioligand Therapy to Osler, we are expanding access to innovative cancer care, reducing the need for travel and ensuring more patients can receive this leading-edge treatment in the communities they live in.”

Patients who want to learn more about Radioligand Therapy and whether they may be eligible should speak with their oncologist.
