William Osler Health System (Osler) has been more than just a workplace for Joshua, it has been the foundation of his growth as both a nurse and a proud member of the community, he’s always called home. As a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department at Brampton Civic Hospital, Joshua joined Osler in 2021 through the New Graduate Guarantee program. Over the past five years, he has built a rewarding career in one of the busiest and most dynamic clinical environments, where every day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a difference.

From passion to purpose

Joshua’s journey into health care began long before nursing school. Through volunteer experiences in the health care sector during elementary and high school, he discovered a passion for helping others and making a meaningful impact. “I knew early on that I wanted to do something that affected people’s lives in a real way,” Joshua shares. That drive, combined with his interest in emergency care, led him to pursue nursing at York University and ultimately to join Osler. For Joshua, choosing to start his career at Brampton Civic Hospital was also about something more personal, it was about giving back to his community. “I grew up in the area, and I wanted to give back to the community that I grew up in.”

Thriving in a dynamic environment

Since joining the Emergency Department, Joshua has embraced the fast-paced nature of the work. “There’s never a dull moment. Every shift is completely different – it keeps you on your toes.” Working in emergency care means constantly adapting, thinking critically and learning in real time. For Joshua, this environment has been key to both his professional growth and job satisfaction. “I don’t think I’ve gone a week without learning something new,” he says. “You’re always developing your skills.” The high patient volume and variety of cases at Osler provide a unique opportunity to practice a wide range of clinical skills daily, something Joshua believes has significantly shaped him for the better as a nurse.

A culture of teamwork and collaboration

At the core of Joshua’s experience at Osler is a strong sense of teamwork. “Health care is always a team sport, but in the Emergency Department it’s especially true,” he explains. From nurses and physicians to Diagnostic Imaging teams, collaboration is essential to delivering safe, effective patient care. Joshua highlights how colleagues consistently support one another. “If you need help, colleagues come. Nobody’s going to tell you no unless they physically can’t.” This culture extends beyond immediate teams, fostering open communication and problem-solving across Osler’s many departments. Whether coordinating patient care or troubleshooting delays, the focus remains on working together to achieve the best outcomes. “Everyone is willing to collaborate and solve problems for the benefit of the patient.”

Learning through curiosity and connection

While Osler offers a wide range of formal professional development opportunities, Joshua has also found growth through initiative and mentorship. Taking a personal interest in point-of-care ultrasound technology, he began learning directly from physicians in the Emergency Department. “Our physicians are great teachers, they’re always willing to show you and answer questions,” he says. For Joshua, some of the most meaningful learning happens day to day, alongside his colleagues. “We’re always looking for ways to improve our practice,” he says. Whether it's debriefing after a critical case, sharing insights during a lunch-and-learn or learning from a physician who takes the time to walk a student through a procedure, there’s a genuine culture of teaching and continuous improvement in the department. He also values opportunities such as preceptorship workshops, which help nurses build the skills and confidence to support students and new graduates. “People here are invested in helping each other grow,” he adds. “There’s a real willingness to share knowledge, and that makes a big difference.

Finding fulfillment in every shift

For Joshua, one of the most rewarding aspects of emergency nursing is seeing the immediate impact of his work. “You can see patients come in really unwell, and within a few hours, they’re a completely different person.” These visible transformations are what make the work so fulfilling, knowing that the care provided has made a direct and meaningful difference. Beyond clinical care, Joshua finds fulfillment in the compassion his team demonstrates.

He recalls a recent experience where colleagues came together to support a patient facing a difficult social situation late at night. “They went above and beyond, pulling together resources and making sure he had somewhere safe to go,” Joshua says. “That really stood out to me.” Moments like these highlight the team’s commitment to holistic, people-centered care.
